Recently, British media reported the indigenous people on Andaman Islands of India are treated as a tool, like animals in the zoo to be exhibited to tourists. They should dance and sing to tourists for foods.
Caution: topless girls.
“Observer’ revealed an undated video, displaying Jarawa women of the Indian tribe on the Andaman Islands are treated as animals. When local police were bribed, they ordered those women to dance and sing to entertainment tourists, and even naked performing. In return, the tourists are happy to throw bananas, cookies to them.
This video caused attention of protection organizations of human rights and some politicians. They strongly condemned this kind of behaviors. V. Kishore Chandra Deo, responsible for tribal affairs, told Press Trust of India that the matter has been investigated. Deo stressed, “these behaviors is strongly prohibited, as treat people as animals for profit, regardless of the nature of tourism.”
However, Justin A, an anthropologist worked in the Andaman Islands, questioned the video’s recording time. Justin said, residents here might be dogged a similar thing, such as forced to entertain tourists for foods, before Indian Ocean tsunami in 2004. In addition, many residents kept the habit of a naked body 6 or 7 years ago, while they dressed up in public places now.
But, “The Observer” insisted that, recently, the newspaper reporter has actually witnessed tourists threw bananas to indigenous visitors and cookies, like the exhibition of local human “zoo”. And the local merchants also told reporter that you can enjoy this kind of “entertainment”, if you bribe the police by a certain amount of money.
